Milling Machinery And Machines

A milling machine is a machine tool that is very much similar to a drill. This tool is used for shaping of metal and other solid materials. Milling is a process of machining flat, curved, or irregular surfaces. Milling machines can be operated manually, mechanically, or digitally with computer numerical control. In drilling where the drill is moved along its axis, the milling process involves movement of the rotating cutter sideways as well as in and out.

Milling machines are classified as vertical or horizontal. In vertical milling machine the spindle is vertically tilting. Milling cutters are held in the spindle and rotate on its axis. This can generally be extended or can be given the same effect by lowering or raising the table. This allows the milling machine to give plunge cuts and drilling. There are 2 subcategories of vertical mills and those are bedmill and turret mill.

A horizontal milling machine offers the same sort of x-y table. The cutters are mounted on a horizontal arbor across the table. A horizontal mill allows milling at shallow angles. Horizontal mills advantage is the side and face mill which have a cross section like a circular saw which is normally wider and smaller in diameter. Milling machines can perform a number of operations, some with complex toolpaths, such as slot cutting, planning, drilling, routing, etc.
